June 4 Diverse environs

Wednesday June 4 was a series of 4 shorter hikes, both high and low in the mountains. First we went to a bog that at a high elevation

Fen

It had crystal clear ponds that are frequented by moose. It also hosted 4 different bug eating plants.

Pitcher plant

This one was out. It attracts a bug into the opening, then the plant has slippery sides and it can’t get out. We also saw 4’ high spruce trees that were 100 years old. Kind of looked like miniature bristle cone pines

Then we went to Benjii lake that was a 2 mile non event to a lake, except for this.

SNOW!!

That’s right! 75 degrees outside on June 4 and we saw 3 different pockets of snow

Then we lost some elevation and went to a protected valley where every tree was a sugar maple. I was excited because it said some of them were 400 years old, but because of the short growing season nothing looked exceedingly big.

JUNE 5. ONE BIG HIKE

It was nice because we could walk right out of camp. We probably only saw a dozen people in 4 hours.

My Strava app

Yep, we did it. it was quite a climb right from the start but the overlooks at the top were amazing

There are bugs here, is an understatement.

We climbed almost 1300 feet and it was all at once, one big up and one big downhill.

Will ya look at this!
The way down we followed a stream

Today was back down in the 50’s and 40’s at night. it will be a shock to go home to 80 degrees. Tomorrow we start back to the states.
