May 18, 2026 Acadia Carriage Trails

Monday was a day of bike riding on carriage trails through an area of Acadia. The carriage trails are used by walkers, horses, and bikes, although we didn’t see any horses yesterday.

The trails are nice and wide and easy to navigate, especially with a battery on your bike. 😉 But Tom is a powerful bike rider and has no problem ascending the hills.

We stopped at a place along the way, Jordan Pond House, which is famous for popovers.

Well, of course we had to see what they were and why the attraction. This is one popover, which we divided and shared. It was good. Kind of reminded me of a single layer of a crescent with a hollow inside.

Although, the carriage trail was marked (lots of confusing signs), what was going to be an 8 mile ride turned into a 20 mile ride. Another contributing factor for the longer ride is that once you’re off of the carriage trails the way back to camp, the park loop, was a one way street – yep, going the wrong way! We finally got onto the main drag, which had a great shoulder, and were able to head to camp along a shorter route.

Once back at camp I got out my art supplies again. My friend Sue and I are challenging each other to do 30 days of gouache paintings.

I know I stopped at Blicks for art supplies on our way out of town last week, but I couldn’t help but try painting on birch bark which I found lying on the path. Don’t know how I’d preserve that painting though, cause it’s water based.

In the evening we took a short hike around camp just marveling at the vegetation. It looked to me like a fairy forest.

Today we’ll hike in an area away from camp. The sun is shining for now. Yay. Rain later. 😒
